Douglas S. Van Dam, Principal Consultant

The goal of Van Dam Consulting Group is to help insurance companies with financial reporting, risk management, and the interface between actuarial and IT.

Doug Van Dam is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (1982) and Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (1980). He has 15 years experience as an actuarial and IT consultant and 30 years experience working for life insurers. Doug works with global insurance companies in implementing strategic actuarial transformations.

He has extensive experience working with IT and financial reporting solutions. Prior to becoming a consultant, Doug spent many years as Chief Actuary and appointed actuary for mid-sized life and health insurance companies leading actuarial staffs of up to 20 people. He has experience with mergers and acquisitions and helped companies with timely and accurate PGAAP implementations.

Doug is an expert in emerging financial reporting issues including IFRS and US GAAP LDTI. He is Chair of the American Academy of Actuaries Financial Reporting Committee and Past-Chair of the Society of Actuaries Financial Reporting Section Council. He has been active with the International Actuarial Association Insurance Accounting Committee preparing practice notes on IFRS 17. Doug speaks regularly at industry events.

Sample of completed consulting projects:

  • IFRS 17 and LDTI implementation support for multi-line international insurer. Work included analysis of financial impact, design of implementation plan including methodology and accounting policies, and implementation of new sub-ledger.
  • Provided temporary support for company finance and actuarial departments after departure of CFO/Chief Actuary.
  • Audit support including GAAP, PGAAP, and Stat methods and results.
  • Implementation of cloud-based financial reporting platform for major US life insurance company.
  • Peer review of actuarial model and explanation of differences for model update. Review of assumptions and methodology.
  • Peer review of LTC loss recognition process.
  • Assist global SAP partner with specification for implementation of IFRS 17.
